Making Music on the iPad

I’ve been making music on my PC and Mac for years but I always felt that I could use a device for when I’m travelling. I really need something to capture quick ideas and moments of inspiration. Laptops were always a bit too expensive and to be honest a bit too clunky for me to be carrying around. That’s why I was so excited when the iPad was launched. It’s the perfect music making device thanks to it’s touch screen technology and light compact design.

So how easy is it to make music on the iPad? The answer to that is exceptionally easy! It doesn’t come with any music making apps out of the box. We’re still waiting for some sort of Garage Band port to come with the iPad as standard. However on the wonderful iPad app store there are literally hundreds of applications on there that you can use to make music on the iPad. Don’t forget that you can also buy applications for the iPhone which will work on the iPad. The graphics are simply sized up to fit on the bigger screen. I’ve had mixed success with this, some applications seem to port better than others.

Applications such as Beatmaker have been rewritten specifically for the iPad and if you want my advice, this is a great application to start with. It offers a sequencer and drum machine and comes with a large selection of professionally recorded samples. The styles of samples vary from hip hop to techno so you should find something in there to suit your taste and let you get started composing music on the iPad. There is also a feature which lets you import samples that you may have created outside of Beatmaker. This extends the application and allows you to create original tracks of your own creation. The sequencer allows you layer the loops and structure the samples in a proper song format. You have a multi track sequencer in your hand so there’s no stopping you!

In conclusion I’ve found the iPad to be a great device for making music on the move. I spend a lot of my time travelling so being able to work when I’m on a plane or train is excellent. The iPad app store is still in its infancy since the device has only been for sale for a few months. As time goes on, more and more of the big music developers will no doubt jump on to the platform and write applications solely for use on the iPad.

It’s easy to compose music on the iPad because there are so many wonderful applications. I would never have expected making music on the iPad to be fun as well as challenging thanks to intuitive interface.
